O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. Her vocal performance impressed the panel of judges and she was promoted to the 100th round. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, top 3, and bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following an impressive string of performance. With two other stunning performance on September 7 2005, the day that O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, judge Werner reported that newspapers in the early morning will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
